ART-241 Fall 2021

Final Prep: Ideas, Sketches, and Notes

CHOSEN ARTIST: Aïcha Wijland

One of Aïcha’s self-portraits.

For this project, we were asked to work in the style/method of another artist. Aïcha Wijland has been an artist I have been following for years and is actually one of the people who inspired me to take up painting in the first place. She’s currently an art director at The Monkeys but has also worked as an illustrator and animator for big projects such as Sesame Street. I first found her YouTube channel in 2015, and have been seeing her grow as an artist since. For this project, I thought it would be interesting to emulate her style in my pieces due to having such a connection with her work.

This was a quick study I did in Clip Studio Paint to try to match Aïcha Wijland’s art style. It was difficult, as in the past I never had much luck with painting digitally, but I think I did a decent job.

Thumbnails for potential self-portrait ideas. I eventually went with the third thumbnail as a final idea.

Thumbnails for the second painting, which is going to be on a larger canvas.

The final decision for the second painting.

This is the source material for my second painting. It is a piece I did in the drawing 400 level class, where I first drew the scene traditionally with pen on paper. Then, I transferred the image to Clip Studio Paint to add digital elements, such as the yellow tint, the black background, and the text in the bottom right.
